Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers must be informed of their critical role as their children's first teacher.

In cooperation with The Kansas City Public Library, Wonderscope is proud to present Every Child Ready to Read. Led by specially trained instructors, this workshop will prepare parents and childcare providers with the tools they need to start their child on the path to reading. In this one-hour workshop, you will be introduced to the following pre-reading skills, and ways to help your child develop them:

  • Print Motivation
  • Vocabulary
  • Print Awareness
  • Letter Knowledge
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Narrative Skills

Meet the Presenters:

Helma Hawkins is Director of Children’s Services at the Kansas City Public Library. Helma has served on the Newbery and Caldecott committees, both of which meet annually to select the most distinguished American children’s literature and illustration.

Carrie McDonald is Outreach Manager for the Kansas City Public Library and was previously a middle school developmental reading teacher in the Clark County, Nevada School District. Carrie also serves on the board of Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City.
